Holiday: Frequent Flyer Day

The extreme always makes an impression. - Jeff Hardy

"Hell, Murdock can fly anything! Just put him the pilot's seat and it's gone. Trust me."

Ray leaned back against the crates, smiling. The other men in the hangar just looked skeptical.

Finally, Jimmy spoke up. "So I'll grant you he can fly any plane or chopper, but most pilots could do that. But he couldn't fly a car, 'cause there ain't any such thing as a flying car."

"Actually, there is."

The guys looked up in surprise, no one having noticed Murdock walking up.

"That's bullshit, Murdock." Jimmy snorted.

"No, no, it's true. There've been quite a few of them. Sure, there were a lot of failures, but a lot of them really could fly. First one was way back in 1935. The Waterman Arrowbile, built in the US."

"So how come we don't see any flying around? Huh?"

"All kinds of reasons, but mostly 'cause they cost too much to build and get through all the government paperwork. But there's one, an Aerocar, that's still flying. It was certified back in '56, but they couldn't get enough orders to go into manufacturing. Only made six, but that one little bugger's still flying." Murdock smiled quietly. "I'd love to try that out."

"Ah, you're full of it, Murdock."

"Hey - man might be crazy, but he don't lie." BA glared at the group in general, and they quickly nodded their agreement.

"So, okay, you could fly one of those cars. What about a boat?"

"Lots of places have flying boats. Navy used the Convair until a few years ago. Piece of cake."

"Okay, okay. So planes, choppers, cars, boats - you can fly them all. But..." Jimmy grinned and winked, "bet you couldn't fly a tank!"

Murdock closed his eyes and frowned. The men waited in silence. Finally, Murdock sighed.

"Closest anyone's come to that is the Russians. Didn't work out, though. Now we just dump them out with a parachute. But to actually fly one..." He closed his eyes, head tilted. "Have to use a different kind of parachute, maybe that new parafoil. Probably take a couple big ones. And add some rigging so you could control them from inside, but... yeah. Man, that'd be something. I'd try that in a New York minute!"

Ray shook his head. Like the others, he knew if Murdock thought it could be done, it could be.
