She was watching from her window. The parking lot, five stories below, nearly full now. And he was on his way.

Carol's words wafted through her thoughts. She sighed softly. That's what best friends were for, after all. Seeing things missed. Ignored.

She saw the Vette drive into the lot and instinctively pulled back. She didn't want him to see her. As if he would know, just by seeing her silhouette.

It wasn't too late. He was only now moving toward the front of the building, a little spring in his step. She didn't have to go through with it. It could still be just as before.

Happy.

They had been happy together. Until Carol met him, and started asking questions. Questions she herself should have asked; questions he couldn't - or wouldn't - answer.

Carol told her after she was a fool.

That's what friends were for, after all.
